Buying A First Guitar - Classical or Acoustic?

I understand well that it can be quite daunting trying to decide which guitar will be suitable for you as you begin taking guitar lessons. Music shops are always very helpful and will guide you in your choice of instrument. Here I give one or two tips.

The initial decision is to decide whether to go for a classical or an acoustic guitar. Classical guitars are lighter and have nylon strings, which to begin with are easier to play. Acoustic guitars have steel strings and are a bit harder on the fingers in the beginning. For young children I would advise a classical guitar. Depending on the age of the child, the choice will be between a 1/2 size, 3/4 size or full size guitar.

For older students, a factor that may influence your choice is the genres of guitar music you are looking to play. It is possible to play a wide range of classical, folk and popular music on both types of guitar, but an acoustic guitar might suit you best if you are thinking of primarily accompanying yourself singing.

Also, when buying your first guitar, invest in a music stand, these are usually about £15.
